Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO: platforms have made booking holiday homes easier than ever. You can browse hundreds of options, compare reviews and pay in a few clicks. But convenience comes at a price. A price you pay directly as a guest, every time you book through a platform.
In this article we explain the real cost of platform bookings, what you get back when you book direct and when a platform is still the better choice. We try to be honest, including about our own offer.
What does a platform booking really cost?
Airbnb charges guests a service fee of 6 to 12% on top of the rental price. That fee only appears at the end of the booking process. You find a lovely apartment for 800 euros a week, but at checkout you pay 860 to 896 euros.
Booking.com works differently: hosts pay a commission of 15 to 20%. That commission is built into the price you see. It looks cheaper, but it is not: the host has raised the base price to cover the commission.
In short: every platform booking helps pay for the business model of an American or European platform. Nothing wrong with that, but it is better to know.
The benefits of booking direct

More flexibility
Platforms have standard cancellation policies that do not always fit your situation. When you book direct, we discuss the terms together. Want to extend your stay because you are having such a good time? Sort it out with a quick message, not a ticket in a customer service system.
A stay tailored to you
An extra cot for a grandchild, early check-in because your flight lands early, a tip for a good fish restaurant nearby: you arrange it directly with us. Personal contact makes all the difference to a pleasant stay.
But what about safety?
Platforms offer guarantees: payment protection, host verification and customer service that helps if something goes wrong. That is genuinely valuable, and we do not want to downplay it.
But a registered holiday home with an official tourist licence number offers comparable protection. Our accommodations in Calpe and Torrevieja hold all the required Spanish tourist licences. You pay by bank transfer, receive a confirmation with all arrangements in writing, and know exactly who to contact.
It is not the case that booking direct is risky and a platform is safe. It comes down to trust in the host. And you build that trust by reading reviews, asking questions and finding out who is behind the accommodation.

When is a platform the better choice?
To be fair: there are situations where a platform is more convenient. If you are travelling to an unfamiliar destination for the first time and do not know the host at all, a platform offers an easy way to compare options and read reviews.
And if you have little choice and the holiday home you want is only available through a platform, then of course you book through that platform.
But once you know and trust a host, and you are returning to the same accommodation or the same area, booking direct is the smarter choice in almost every case.
Our approach
We are on Airbnb and Booking.com for new guests who discover us through those channels. But we always ask returning guests to book direct: you pay less, we receive more and the contact is more personal.
